Slime mold Infographic.

Medium: Adobe photoshop and illustrator

Audience: General Public

Purpose: To briefly summarize and illustrate the biology of the slime mold Comatricha nigra in this mini infographic.

DEVELOPMENT 1: PHOTOGRAPHIC REFERENCES

Online photographic references of the specimen were first collected as a starting point to study the texture, shape and colour, along with research on the behaviour of this species. (Credit to Barry Webb, Andy Sands, and Timothy Boomer.)

DEVELOPMENT 2: IDEATION

Rough thumbnails and refined sketches of each thumbnail were developed. The idea was to illustrate the individual parts of the fungi, and to visually demonstrate the colour change this species undergoes as it matures from birth to death.

DEVELOPMENT 3: COMPREHENSIVE AND FINAL

One of the refined sketches was developed into a b&w comprehensive drawing consisting of the final layout of all the elements and text. As this was meant to be a relatively simple piece, my choice of colour was minimal; I chose a soft pink hue as the main colour (as it was the colour of the fungi) and a shade of brown to represent the wooden surfaces Comatricha nigra grows on.
