Preserflo Microshunt Implantation.

Date: May 10, 2022

Medium: Adobe photoshop and Illustrator

Audience: Ophthalmology surgical residents

Content Advisors: Dr. Ike Ahmed, Dr. Ema Avdagic & Dr. Ticiana De Francesco

Purpose: To illustrate the surgical sequence involved in the implantation of a Preserflo microshunt intended to reduce intraocular pressure within the eye.

DEVELOPMENT 1: OR SURGICAL SKETCHES

Rough surgical sketches of the procedure were made directly in the OR during observation of the surgery.

DEVELOPMENT 2: REFERENCE BOARDS

Multiple reference boards were created- one for rendering inspiration (left) anatomical references (middle) and surgical references (right). I also had access to patient surgical videos provided by the content advisors.

DEVELOPMENT 3: FIRST DRAFT

As this was a lengthy procedure to illustrate, I organized the steps into sections A-B, each divided into multiple other steps. Because this was intended as instructional material for surgical residents, I kept the viewpoint typical of how the surgeon would view the surgical area.

DEVELOPMENT 4: SECOND DRAFT

After the previous draft was was reviewed by the content advisors, a refined version was created in which anatomical accuracy was taken into greater consideration. Graphical elements such as leader lines, callout boxes and arrows were added and the layout was finalized.

DEVELOPMENT 5: RENDERING

The final draft was rendered in grayscale in Adobe photoshop for realism and anatomy accuracy.
